Dark Chronicle, also known as Dark Cloud 2 in the US, is a game that was developed by Level-5 in 2003. It was never really famous, however it would have deserved it because it's one big masterpiece from Inazuma Eleven's daddies.

Alright, so what is it about?
Yurisu (Maximilian/Max in the english version) is a 13 years old 19th century boy who was born in a rich family. However, rather than staying at the manor, he gets over with the boredom by visiting his best friend Cedric, an old handyman who considers him as his apprentice. Max's biggest passions are technology and robots. (Well, 19th century, of course!). His mother disappeared when he was a child, and all that remains of her are faint memories.

One day, Max gets a mysterious red pendant from his father who tells him to keep it as a treasure. The following day, the Flotsam circus arrives in town, and Max goes to the representation. But a red-haired barefoot boy steals his ticket - Max catches him, but feels pitiful for the young boy and decides to give him the ticket. However, instead of going to the circus, the boy turns back, says something that sounds like a prophety, and disappears magically.

During the representation, Max witnesses the circus' boss, Flotsam, threatening the city's mayor, Need. He wants him to find a powerful red stone. Max gets spotted and finds himself running away from a raving mad clowns army througout the city! (Not to mention Flotsam's giant & freaky Clown robot that looks like a spider with a clown face...) He's rescued by Donny, a friend of his, who hides him in a place called Underground Channel. But Max is so curious he can't stay there without doing anything, so he decides to do what he's always dreamed to : run away from the city (which has actually been closed from the outside world for 15 years) and find out about his mother's disappearance, for Flotsam seems to know a lot about her...

Later Max will meet a 15 years old, pink haired and pretty violent girl called Monica, who says she's coming from the future with the purpose of finding him. She's got another power stone (we learn later they are called Atlamillia) which allows her to travel through time. In Monica's time, towns are disappearing without any reason, apparently - it's actually the fault of an evil being called Emperor Griffon, who sends his soldiers and monsters at different places and times (Max's time) to destroy everything so that all sort of things never happened in the future. Their mission is to find spheres called Geostones and rebuild what has been destroyed in Max's time so that everything come back to normal in the future - and why not improve it...

____

The game is a dungeon-RPG, so the fights take place in real time. The battle system is quite developed so you never get bored in the dungeons, although it can seem repetitive. For example you've got 2 weapons by character that you can use at the same time(wrench/hammers and guns for Max and swords/magic for Monica), you can ride a robot (that you can customize yourself by buying pieces), or even turn into monsters and talk with them to get hints. The characters don't have a "level" as in other RPGs, but their weapons do ; you must improve the weapons by gaining experience and using special items. The characters travel around the world in a train called Blackstone, which is replaced by a very flashy space-time travelling train called Ixion (it's blue and yellow, btw...). You also have to gather people from Max's city in order to make them live in the villages you're rebuilding, and, of course, they won't go with you unless you do something for them (sometimes puzzles. I hate puzzles. Why are they all obssessed with PUZZLES!)despair And, actually, that's not all, but it'd be too long to list everything you can do.
As for the story, the farther you go, the more complicated it gets. Max must be like "BUT WHAT THE HELL DID I DO TO GET MYSELF IN THAT SH***?! please " LOL.

It's very nice of you to share DC with us Akemini ;3
The plot is at least more original than the clichey "OMG SAVE DA EARTH DURR" stuff.
